Roman god of war and agriculture, son of Jupiter and Juno. Mars, unlike the Greek Ares, was a dignified figure representing military power for peace. March (Martius) is named for him, marking the start of military and farming seasons. He fathered Romulus and Remus, Rome's founders, through Rhea Silvia.
