Titan son of Iapetus, Atlas was tasked with holding the heavens after the Titanomachy. Hesiod placed him in the west; later, he was linked to the Atlas Mountains and Mauretania's first king. Father of the Hesperides, Hyades, and Pleiades, he was skilled in astronomy, credited with the celestial sphere's invention, and inspired the term "atlas" for map collections.
