AD 238 saw at least six (or seven) claimants to the Roman throne. Maximinus Thrax began the year as emperor. Gordian I & II briefly ruled after an African revolt. Pupienus & Balbinus were then appointed by the Senate, along with Gordian III, before all were murdered, leaving Gordian III as sole ruler.
