Potassium
About Potassium
Element K, atomic number 19, is a soft, silvery alkali metal. Rapid oxidation forms potassium peroxide upon air exposure. Derived from "potash" (plant ashes), it was isolated in 1807 via electrolysis. Found in seawater and minerals like orthoclase, it reacts violently with water. Vital for nerve transmission, its isotope 40K is in the human body.
