Israeli materials scientist, born 1941. Discovered quasicrystals in 1982 while at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. These aperiodic crystals defied conventional understanding. Shechtman was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this groundbreaking work.
