About Lion of Belfort
Bartholdi's monumental 1880 sculpture, the Lion of Belfort, is carved from red sandstone at the foot of Belfort Citadel in France. This colossal work, by the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, commemorates the city's heroic resistance during the 1870-71 Siege of Belfort in the Franco-Prussian War.
