WSPU members, called "suffragettes," campaigned for women's suffrage in early 20th century Britain. Founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst, they used direct action when peaceful means failed. The name, coined in 1906, was embraced despite its belittling origin, and their motto was "deeds, not words."
