About Octavia E. Butler
American author Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006) penned award-winning science and speculative fiction. The Pasadena, CA native was the first sci-fi writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995. Inspired by childhood reading, she sold her first stories after attending the Clarion Workshop. Her works explored themes of race and identity, and her papers are at the Huntington Library.
