Ancient Egyptian tomb, a flat-roofed rectangular structure with sloping sides. Built of mudbrick or limestone, mastabas marked elite burials during the Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom. The Arabic name means "bench," while Egyptians called them "house of eternity."
